1984 BC BOXING DIAMOND BELT
THE DIAMOND BELT CHAMPIONSHIPS: by brian zelley
As boxers of 2011/2012 get ready to compete in the 2012 Diamond Belt
tournament some in the game may remember the 1984 Tournament
which was hosted by Vancouver's Shamrock Boxing Club and was held
at the Boxing BC Training Centre in North Burnaby.
THE FINALS:
Jim Cumberland, Willy Curry, Wayne Welsh, Trevor Holmes,
Deep Butter, Roger LaFlamme, Peter Beltrame, Alan Brown,
Richard Compart, John Cozad, Leon Chambers, Cody Redford,
Paddy Nelson, Mike O'Connell, Laird Goodwill and Jaime Ballard.

THE FIFTIES GOLDEN GLOVES
1959 GOLDEN GLOVE: By Brian Zelley
At the end of the tournament Jack Straza would be declared Golden Boy
following three convincing wins over Bill Tsuchiya of Wallaces Athletic
Club, Bill Lipsey of Sidney and Henry Banki of Vancouver's
South Hlll Boxing Club.
Some of the other boxers in the tournament was Ernie Burgmann,
Dick Coulson, Morris Jermyn, Vic Vieberg, Bruce Baille,
Tommy Black, Elroy Engler, Wayne Orrick, Joe Czaja
and Edward "Skimp" Williams.
In one bout is was an all Vancouver Island bout when
Bruce Baille of Chemainus defeated slick Tommy Black
from Victoria.

BC GOLDEN GLOVES, 1980 to 1989: by brian zelley
The year 1980 would be part of an excellent decade
in the history of the British Columbia Amateur Boxing
Association's Golden Gloves tournaments from the
Junior Golden gloves with the likes of CLIFF BALLENDINE
and the Youth and Senior boxers Golden Gloves action with
the first true star being JAMIE OLLENBERGER.
Jamie would follow the Golden Glove boxers of the
Seventies from the likes of Freddy Fuller, Frank Scott,
Gordie Lawson, Buzz Montour, Derrick Hoyt, Wayne Crowe,
"Dynamite" Dan Wright, David Ius, and many others.
Throughout the Eighties there would be many Golden Gloves
alumni - boxers, coaches and officials any many volunteers
including the Golden Boys such as RON PASKIE and
GLEN QUOCKSISTER.

The 1984 BC Junior Golden Gloves took place on
April 28th. at the Boxing BC Training Centre in
Burnaby.

The 2011 BC Golden Gloves marks the Golden (50th)Anniversary
of the 1961 Golden Gloves with the Golden Boy being
BILL (Curly) ADAMS.
FLASHBACK - 2010 BC Golden Gloves
The 2010 BC Golden Gloves were hosted by the
Capital City Boxing Club of Victoria.
At the end of the tournament, selected as
Golden Boy was DYLAN BISHOP and recognized
was the Golden Boy of 1960 - ALAN CURTIS.
