1967 B C DIAMOND BELT BOXING Tournament Memories: By Brian Zelley

The year 1967 was an important Centennial Year in Canada, and the sport of amateur boxing in British Columbia
opened the year with a one-two knockout punch of action, entertainment and participation in Centennial Celebrations.
Following the BC Golden Gloves in February "67, the sport followed-up with a dynamic drama filled event in the form of the
International Diamond Belt Tournament with over 55 boxers competing in ten weight divisions at Vancouver's
"PNE Agrodome" and the special guest referee was the former undefeated Heavyweight Champion ROCKY MARCIANO.

Weigh-in and sign-in took place on a thursday and boxing action took place Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and night.

The twenty boxers that fought their way into the finals were:
Derek Austin, Ron MacEachern, Frank Scott, James Logan, Wayne Boyce, Brian Zelley, Dick Coulson,
Ken Lee, Dave Wylie, Freddy Fuller, Jim Russell, Pat O'Reilly, Donato Paduano, Dennis Rorick,
George Smith, Ron Wilson, James Allen, Marijan Kolar, Wesley Craven and Bill Taylor.

Semi-finalists included:
Randy Jones (Oregon), Allen and Ted Webb (Oregon), Del Deugau, Andy Anderson (Seattle),
Dick Findlay and Steve Tohill (Vancouver Firefighters), Jerry Winters, Gord Sinclair,
Wm. Daniels (US Navy), Sam Wilson (California), Clint Page (Astoria Boxing Club).
Terry Eastman, Ken Alexander, Melvin Harris and Don Staab.

Other competitors:
Ken Henderson, Mike Fisher, Brian Gray, Stan Parker, Larry Housman, Ronnie Brown,
Ed Williams, Therman Mikes, Robert Hawkins, Chester Douglas, Les Vegas, Colin Coleridge,
Kalman Santosi, Frank Bull, Bruce Geis, Richard Fleck, Larry High, Bob Winters, and Jamie Phills.

  1. Three of the boxers of the 1967 tournament are included with the ten boxers that will be the core group in the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Hall Of Fames:
    DICK FINDLAY - FREDDY FULLER - FRANK SCOTT
    .Also, all three were members of Canada's 1967 Pan American Boxing Team.

  2. In 2011, THE BOYCE FAMILY were selected for the
    BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME.
    Wayne Boyce is one of the boxer alumni of the 1967 tournament.
